"Low Rising" is the lovely new single from The Swell Season, aka Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová from the film Once. The song comes from their latest album, Strict Joy. Interestingly, the video was directed by Sam Beam, who is better known for his musical recordings under the name Iron & Wine. I wonder if Beam was referencing Bad Luck Shleprock by having the rain falling just on their heads. Probably not, but it's still fun to think so. I had the opportunity to interview Glen and Mar before their recent Oakland, California concert. Stay tuned for more on that amazing experience, including a special performance for BB Video....

A musical theater adaptation of one of my favorite fiction books, William Lindsay Gresham's 1946 noir carny novel Nightmare Alley, will premiere in April at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. As my brother Bob wrote when he emailed me this news, "I can't wait to hear the geek sing."...

Matt Groening is curating one of the All Tomorrow's Parties music festivals in Somerset, England this May, and the lineup is fantastic, featuring Iggy and the Stooges, Coco Rosie, Daniel Johnston, Joanna Newsom, and a bunch of other acts. Also playing is the surreal three-piece Tiger Lilies, whose spooky Brechtian cabaret style is sure to give you nightmares that will shock and entertain. For example, please to enjoy the wonderful video for Tiger Lillies' "Living Hell." It was directed by San Francisco photographer Mark Holthusen. Also worth noting is that in 2003, Tiger Lilies released a collaboration with Kronos Quartet and Edward Gorey in which they translated some of his unpublished stories into songs. The resulting CD, The Gorey End, was nominated for a Grammy. (Thanks, Chris Edmundson!)...
