A couple of people asked for a donate button of some sort. I hesitate because of the sudden complexity of things when money is involved. Here is what I think would be best:
- Donate your time and skills if you can rather than money.
- If you cannot do so, please consider sponsoring something we could directly use: Such as a USB serial cable (about $45 for parts from Sparkfun), or perhaps upgrading the Slicehost slice we're borrowing from pumpkin ($60 per month, though it would only be useful if we could get enough money for at least six months), used or broken devices for testing, etc. Or something like a pizza for one of our contributors on a late night hacking binge (we will distribute food donations on a round-robin basis =P)
- My paypal address is my gmail e-mail address (planetbeing). If you do make a donation, please specify exactly what it is for. A gigantic slush fund is something that I wish to avoid.
For the record, contrary to what was published by some media sources, the iphonelinux group is not associated with the group commonly known as the "iPhone Dev Team". I'm a member of the Dev Team, and other members sometimes lends assistance or advice, but this is an entirely separate project. The Dev Team does not accept any donations whereas this project tentatively will.

Everyone is aware of the tough economic times we are currently in and there is no need to beat on that dead horse. We are all hoping things will get better and doing what we can to get by. On a positive note I did just filled the gas tank up for $1.69/gallon.
Like everything else new tool and equipment sales are down and most companies are running tight, trying to make do with what they have. When it is time to invest in new tools obviously we all still need professional grade tools but perhaps are doing a little more price shopping to find the best deals. Ohio Power Tool is doing what we can to help our customers in anyway possible. We sell new tools and try to get the best price out there we can. We are not the biggest so we limit the number of brands we carry which allows us to get the very best pricing on those lines we do stock and pass the savings on to the customers.
Ohio Power Tool also Repairs Tools and equipment in-house because sometimes tools don’t actually need replaced they just need a new switch and some other part to get them working again. Another service Ohio Power Tool offers customers is rental tools and equipment which we are currently in the process of expanding our inventory. Some customer will rent while their equipment is being repaired, while other customers will rent for specific jobs or until it makes sense for their business to buy a new piece of equipment. Checkout the New Rental Pages to see some of what we offer from Seesnakes to core drills to full hydraulic systems. Outside of Ohio you can rent this equipment on a weekly or monthly basis and have it shipped directly to you.
The good news is there is still a lot of work out there that needs to be done and things are going to improve. Whether you need new tools, repairs on your old ones or just need to rent something for a specific job Ohio Power Tool can help. Most of our staff has 10-20 years in the business and can answer all your questions so call us 800-242-4424.

Last week, Joey Hess revealed that the Palm Pre running on WebOS uploads very specific information about your location and application usage to Palm on a daily basis. Although it’s allowed by the EULA that you must accept to use the Palm Pre, it still seems a little…creepy, especially if used for the wrong reasons. The only “bright” side to this story is that it was for the Palm Pre, not for the iPhone. Apple has been in the news a lot lately for its AppStore shenanigans, but at least they don’t go so far as to track your location. Right?
Well, sort of. Although we have yet to find an application by Apple that tracks your location, there are certainly a number of “free” applications in the official AppStore that are designed to do just that. Case in point: there’s this rather cute/gimicky app that lets you determine the tip for your waiter or waitress by tilting your phone as you pass it around the restaurant table. But if you dig a little deeper (like bushing did) you’ll find it uses a library by Pinch Media that is specifically designed to track your geographical location through time, then upload that data to Pinch Media. (Oh and it also show you an ad, as an extra bonus).
Being an approved app, it must first ask you for permission to use your location. If you tap “Don’t Allow”, it will ask you again in about a minute, the next time its ad changes. So you either stop using this app (because it pesters you so much about the location question), or you finally submit and tap “OK”. From that point on, your location and path info (your actual physical path through your area each time you launch the app) belongs to Pinch Media, Inc. We think that’s a Pinch too much.
Update: A commenter named fusen pointed out this post by 0th3lo. who details Pinch Media’s SQL info (it includes your gender and birthday, when possible) and goes so far as to say “no doubt, ANY pinchmedia iPhone application is spyware”. Maybe it’s time to pressure Apple to boot Pinch Media apps from the AppStore?
Update: Pinch Media have blogged about the data collected by their analytics library here.
Update: Jailbroken users are now at a distinct advantage when it comes to data tracking. saurik has worked with Pinch Media and some other data trackers to develop an “opt-out” feature for data collection! It’s called PrivaCy and is now available via Cydia!

Many medical conditions, such as chronic pain, cancer and diabetes, require medications that cannot be taken orally, but must be dosed intermittently, on an as-needed basis, over a long period of time. Researchers have devised a drug delivery solution that combines magnetism with nanotechnology.

Our liberal op-ed writers don't think a president from Chicago is tough enough.. Again, whatever you may think of the president or his policies, this at least is a man who puts in long hours and faces danger on a daily basis and takes a lot of heat from all quarters and does more than suck his thumb for a living.
