Kottke: Raising minimalist children in a society of excess

How do you simplify your life and possessions when kids are in the mix?

Don't feel guilty. Modern parents are made to feel as if they are depriving their children of "the best" if they don't sign them up for every lesson, take them to every movie, or buy them every brain-enhancing toy. Advertising companies are paying billions of dollars to make you think this. It is not reality... it is a fictional version of reality they are selling. Let it go. Don't "buy" into it. You are not depriving your children; you are enhancing their mental and emotional development by letting the real world around them captivate and interest them. Do you think the Smiths' kids are really better off because they spend all their free time in front of a television or playing with a DSI?

Techcrunch: “Thank You” Email Causes Angry Mob To Descend On AT&T Facebook Page

Earlier today AT&T sent out a "Special Message From AT&T" email highlighting a 18-19 million dollar investment in their network as well as plans for other improvements. The email provides a link to their Facebook page an avalanche of comments like this cropped up:
""Im only sticking out my contract because I dont have the money to pay a termination fee at the moment. "
"I switched to AT&T solely for the iPhone. I have such terrible reception in my neighborhood that I can't actually use it as a phone. My coworker received a FREE microcell for this very reason, apparently he is a "valued AT&T customer" whereas I am not. I spoke with several people at AT&T on multiple calls trying to receive one also, but they all insisted "no one" has ever gotten it free. I know this is untrue because I saw the letter from granting him a free microcell at any AT&T store and was there as he received his complimentary device, "as a valued customer." Sad that your company had to develop an VoIP device so people could use their phone for it's intended purpose, especially in a major city like San Francisco. Perhaps spending 10s of billions of dollars on your network is not such sound footing, for when the iPhone goes to different carriers, surely so will your entire iPhone customer base. Let me know when you're ready to send me my free microcell."

They stretch up to two and a half times the height of Nelson's Column at Trafalgar Square, their number is close to a hundred, and their mission is to bring clean, renewable energy into British homes. Yes, we're talking about turbines. The latest wind farm to be erected near the Queen's most sovereign isles is said to be the largest in the world (for now) and promises to produce enough energy to keep 240,000 homes going -- the equivalent of half the county of Kent. It's part of the UK's grand plan to generate at least 20 percent of all its power needs through the taming of the winds and cost the Kingdom a cool £780 million ($1.2b) to build. That's admittedly a big bill to swallow, but there are worse things to blow your billions on... such as, say, the Millennium Dome.
