Concrete Saw for Basement Waterproofing / Foundation Repair

Posted by on under cinder block, basement waterproofing, ultimate man, pool tables, foundation repair, basements, mildew, caves, amp, concrete |

Here in Ohio most of our homes have basements, depending on when the home was built this could be poured concrete, cinder block or like one of the homes I grew up in, a foundation made of stones. Yes rocks mortared together, which actually was very dry for a 100+ year old home. Unfortunately some basements do not hold up that well and many of us want to use that space to build our ultimate Man Caves. Before you go dropping $10K on plasmas & pool tables you are going to want to be sure the basement is watertight and mildew free.

The Search For the Mount Everest of Caves

NoMeansYes writes "An interview with James Tabor, author of the new best-selling book Blind Descent, introduces a pair of accomplished scientists — American Bill Stone and Ukranian geologist Alexander Klimchouk — who are the two most prominent figures in extreme caving. Both have figured prominently in the ongoing quest to discover the deepest cave on earth. Tabor describes what conditions are like inside supercaves like Cheve (-4,869 feet) and Krubera (-7,188 feet), before discussing Stone and his far-reaching technological innovations. These include the Posideon Discovery Rebreather and NASA's ENDURANCE. Extreme caving probably won't remain underground (so to speak) much longer, however. The article notes that James Cameron is planning to release a 3D film next year about extreme cave divers."

Boing Boing: The lighthouse at Devil's Island

Devil's Island is the northernmost point in Wisconsin, but it might as well be at the end of the world. The South end looks onto the other Apostle Islands—a conglomerate of 21 heavily wooded islands in Lake Superior. The North end of Devil's Island looks out into infinity. For all you can tell, there's nothing past the horizon but a waterfall off the edge of a flat Earth. It's an eerie feeling, for somebody who grew up landlocked. And it gets only creepier when you set foot on Devil's Island and find that the temperature has gone up at least 15 degrees from what it was out on the lake. Add to that the echoed thud and slurp of water pounding the hollowed-out sandstone caves that line the island's coast, and you've got a romantically spooky experience. I visited Devil's Island last month, largely to see its lighthouse—a 19th-century paean to riveted steel, topped with a vintage Fresnel lens made of crystal and brass. The result is delightful and, dare I say it, more than a little steampunky....
