Paypal fraudsters, please stop sending me money

Posted by on under datis, iphe, ibrickr, mey, jerks, scams, potatoes, stomach, chains, peoe, money |

Recently a number of very suspicious donations have shown up in the iBrickr donation account - large $80 donations coming in on the same day from several different people, or chains of $1 donations coming from different people all with Hispanic names, all on the same day.

I don't appreciate fraudulent donations and I'm sure the victims of these scams don't either. The suspicious donations have been reported to Paypal, and I hope you get caught, jerks!

Thanks to those of you who have sent in genuine donations. Your money is keeping my stomach filled with delicious potatoes. Also, if you haven't donated, that's okay, too! I still love you, just not as much.

As for the status of iBrickr, it has not been terribly useful to me lately (and likely not too much so to you all either), and I have not been developing it actively lately. My attention has shifted to other things (like native iPhone apps)...

QuickPwn - fake sites

Posted by on under google, prae, vultures, muppets, domain names, datis, peoe, blog |

We would just like to point out that that there are lots of fake sites using the QuickPwn name, these muppets donâ??t know anything special, and they donâ??t have anything unique. They are vultures that sit on the domain names and plagiarize content and information in the hope that you donate to them, or click the google ads.

As weâ??ve mentioned before we donâ??t accept donations and we certainly donâ??t allow ads on our site, anyone who asks for donations in our name is lying, end of story.

So we would recommend that you stay away from badly designed chaotic sites (especially ones of a monochrome variety) that capitalize on the name of our tools.

Spammers should also watch out (even if they are part of the extended iPhone community). Like any decent blog we do not moderate our comments, we let the criticism flow alongside the praise but we certainly do filter on spamwords and then decide if they get posted. Play nice people, spamming just isnâ??t cool.

Now of course all that stuff isnâ??t cool, but be prepared for some stuff from us today that is cool.

Donations...

A couple of people asked for a donate button of some sort. I hesitate because of the sudden complexity of things when money is involved. Here is what I think would be best:

  • Donate your time and skills if you can rather than money.
  • If you cannot do so, please consider sponsoring something we could directly use: Such as a USB serial cable (about $45 for parts from Sparkfun), or perhaps upgrading the Slicehost slice we're borrowing from pumpkin ($60 per month, though it would only be useful if we could get enough money for at least six months), used or broken devices for testing, etc. Or something like a pizza for one of our contributors on a late night hacking binge (we will distribute food donations on a round-robin basis =P)
  • My paypal address is my gmail e-mail address (planetbeing). If you do make a donation, please specify exactly what it is for. A gigantic slush fund is something that I wish to avoid.
For the record, contrary to what was published by some media sources, the iphonelinux group is not associated with the group commonly known as the "iPhone Dev Team". I'm a member of the Dev Team, and other members sometimes lends assistance or advice, but this is an entirely separate project. The Dev Team does not accept any donations whereas this project tentatively will.

Boing Boing: Pop-up camper on a shopping cart

Artist Kevin Cyr is building a pop-up camper atop a shopping cart. This is a follow-up to his Camper Bike, a 3-wheeler bicycle with a truck camper on the back. Cyr is looking for donations to help complete the Camper Kart. Cyr writes: It's a functioning sculptural piece that seeks to explore aspects of housing, mobility, and autonomy. It is also largely about self-reliance and making due with less. I have always been interested in bikes and vehicles and for many years they have been the subject of my paintings. My paintings document odd and derelict vehicles: old delivery trucks inundated with graffiti and rust, well-traveled RVs, Indian rickshaws and Asian bikes. Throughout the last year, I decided to build my own type of vehicles. On a trip to Beijing, I conceived and built a CAMPER BIKE: an amalgamation of a Chinese 3-wheeled flatbed bike with an American cabover style camper. Interested in building a series of mobile vehicles and inspired by Cormac McCarthy's novel, The Road, I started sketching plans for CAMPER KART: a mobile unit built into a shopping cart--an ubiquitous urban object. Camper Kart (Kickstarter) "Kevin Cyr's Camper kart" (Hi-Fructose)...

blackra1n

Posted by George Hotz on under 3gs, unlockers, secd, jailbreak, viral marketing, unique hits, 4am, rerun, dev team, itunes, 3g, offerings, datis |

As many of you already know, I am releasing a jailbreak called blackra1n. What many of you don't know is that I'm releasing it tonight! At 4AM EST, I want to see the topic "#blackra1n" trending on twitter. Once I see it trending, I'll put the download link up on blackra1n.com ... Isn't viral "marketing" cool :-)

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n. As far as donations go, they are much appreciated, but not until after blackra1n works for you. I never ask for donations before the tool is released.

Warning 3g and 3gs unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team's offerings. Also blackra1n doesn't hacktivate.

blackra1n.com got a quarter million unique hits, and that's without any content. This jailbreak is going to be huge!!!
