On Unlocking

Posted by George Hotz on under mobile 3g, iphe, veriz, ebay, technical challenge, t mobile, phe, aud, peoe, gps, australia |

Is it really worth it? I mean, aside from the technical challenge, who will really benefit from it? I hear the phone is sold unlocked for +$80 AUD in Australia. Here, the best way to get a phone is to buy one from AT&T then cancel it, $200+$35+175=$410. You are better off buying an old iPhone off eBay. With locate me, how much will a GPS really help? And here in the states, T-Mobile 3G won't work.

I'm curious as to what amplifier chip the phone uses though. The number one question I got from people about the old iPhone unlock is "Will it work with Verizon?" Now it could be possible.

I still don't know how I'm getting my hands on a device. And if I'm not sure, how will everyone else who wants one get one? Apple, this is really a step backward for the consumer. I'm disappointed in you.

Techcrunch: New Lawsuit Brings Clarity To Skype’s IP Problem (Prognosis: Screwed)

When a group of investors pooled their resources a few weeks ago to put a bid in to buy Skype from eBay, I thought there was a good chance that Skype's legal woes were behind them. Apparently, I was wrong, and a new lawsuit makes it clear just how bad the situation is for Skype. Sure, Skype doesn't own its core P2P technology, and founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom were trying to rip that IP out of the service. But that's all old news from months ago. Surely those new investors wouldn't have committed to paying $1.9 billion for 65% of a company that didn't control its IP? At the time of the deal, people close to the transaction told me that the new investors had a much better relationship with Niklas and Janus than eBay, and the situation would soon be worked out. Our best guess was the two would be given a piece of Skype, and possibly a board seat, and the litigation would be dropped.

Skype Founders File Copyright Suit Against eBay

Saif writes to let us know that Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, the founders of Skype, have filed a copyright suit against eBay for altering and sharing the peer-to-peer source code behind the calling service. The founders managed to maintain ownership of the source and licensed it to eBay in their 2005 deal and are now seeking an injunction and statutory damages which could total more than $75 million per day. "Mr. Zennstrom and Mr. Friis have developed a reputation for litigiousness in some legal circles. They filed three separate lawsuits against Pamela Colburn, an investment banker who represented them in the original sale of Skype, in the United States, the Netherlands and Britain. In May, a British judge dismissed the case and said the two men's reason for pursuing the matter in his country 'remains inexplicable.' The buyers of Skype have not publicly addressed the founders' lawsuit against eBay in Britain or their potential legal liability."
