Hi!
Proudly presenting you the new beta of
Installer -
4.0b6.
New and changed:
- Search. It searches among packages from the repositories you have added, and, if you let it sit for 5 seconds, will query our server and return packages that are available from repositories you don't have added (that we know about) with an option to automatically add and install. Repository owners, upgrade to the latest version of the repo code (below) to have your repository added to the search engine.
- Uninstall now works correctly.
- Fixed a lot of locking issues especially with custom HTML info pages.
- Updated the Categories and Tasks icons so they are less ugly.
- Fixed a bug with multiple copies of Installer appearing in Installed Packages under some circumstances.
- Installer will now correctly check and prompt for an update of itself.
Also, to accompany the Installer release, a new edition of the Repository code is up. Grab it here:
repo-r1114.zipWhat's new in the repo code?
- Added an option to ping the Installer search server so it reindexes your repository. The ping occurs during regenerate.php run.
- Much better handling of ZIP archives, since this is what most people had troubles with. It now attempts to determine which way to use to unzip your files (PEAR::ZipArchive, zip_open or shell_exec("unzip")). Please note that we didn't test zip_open piece of the code as we don't have a server with that plugin compiled in PHP.
- DOMDocument::load() should work under PHP4. We hope.
- Slightly better handling of the multiple versions of the same package.
How to upgrade? Simply replace regenerate.php with the new one, and add new configuration parameters from config.inc.default.php to your config.inc.php. There are two: REPOSITORY_URL, that should have a full path to your repo (with a trailing slash), and ZIP_CMDLINE_PATH (only add this if needed). Refer to config.inc.default.php for the descriptions and copy-paste goodness.
Don't forget to regenerate your repositories once upgraded, and also don't forget to put 2.0.2 into POSSIBLE_FIRMWARE_VERSIONS array so people on the new firmware can see your packages!
Thanks. :)

Short version:
You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.
More details:
The 3.0.1 release is a “branch” from 3.0 that occurs (code-wise) before all the 3.1 betas. The programs redsn0w needs to change for the jailbreak are identical when you compare the 3.0 and 3.0.1 versions. It seems pretty much the only changes Apple made were for the SMS bug, which affects programs that redsn0w doesn’t touch. That’s why you can re-use redsn0w 0.8 on 3.0.1 even though it was written for 3.0.
And since 3.0.1 doesn’t touch the baseband either, ultrasn0w 0.9 works for those needing the soft unlock. Just install it from the repo666.ultrasn0w.com repository using Cydia as usual.
We’ll at some point fix redsn0w to recognize both 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW’s, but really that’s the only change that would be made to it. Everything else would be identical, so there’s no need to wait for the “proper” version that recognizes the 3.0.1 IPSW as valid.

It looks like Popcorn Hour's
C-200 media streamer is making its way into end-users' hands, so prepare yourself for a flurry of reviews. Our friend Brent over at GeekTonic should be jumping into the fray soon, and has kicked things off with a preview. Yeah, the C-200 is bigger than its sibling
A-100, but it brings so much to the table that we'd say Popcorn Hour has packed in just as much -- if not more -- goodness per cubic inch. With space available for a hard and/or Blu-ray drive, wired and wireless networking, and USB ports to round out the input connectivity, the C-200 then adds a smorgasbord of codec support just to make sure your bits will survive the translation back into entertainment. With the "it plays anything" kind of capability the C-200 is promising, we've got a feeling that a positive review or two might be the only thing standing between us and a $300 dent in our credit cards.

Of course nobody expects
Motorola and Verizon to be the sole benefactors of
Android 2.0's Donut-ey goodness in the long run, but in an age of increasing Android ubiquity it seemed odd to see them as the only ones with a more-or-less-confirmed Android 2.0 handset on the way. Well, Sascha Segan over at Gearlog did some digging and while Samsung wouldn't confirm any Android 2.0 work, HTC was forthcoming in saying that it's had Android 2.0 around for a while, and is working on it for future phones. Perhaps the HTC Desire (dubbed
Droid Eris) or the
Passion will be one of those phones? It would be odd to see Verizon introduce a 2.0 handset from Motorola and only 1.5 or 1.6 handsets from HTC, but we'll just have to see how it all goes down next month -- Motorola sure seems buddy buddy with Google on this one. But if
Dell could track down a copy, we don't see how far behind HTC could be on this one.

Almost makes you like the Storm more, right? I'm guessing the (presumably resistive) touchscreen was so shoddy that the trackball was actually a required addition. Thank goodness this prototype...
