Rebecca McKinnon has a piece up about the "Global Network Initiative," which launches this week. That's the corporate code of conduct on free speech and privacy I've been talking about in generalities for quite some time. By midnight Tuesday U.S. East Coast time, the full set of documents and list of initial signatories will be made publicly available at globalnetworkinitiative.org. On that website you'll be able to read the full text of the Principles on free expression and privacy. A group of companies, human rights organizations, socially responsible investment funds, academics, and free speech groups spent the last two-plus years reaching agreement on what should go into that document. There will also be a Governance Charter and a set of Implementation Guidelines giving more detail on how companies should adhere to the core principles. There will be an FAQ, list of participants, and contact people for the organizations that have joined the Global Network Initiative so far. The hope is that many more companies, NGOs, investment funds, and academic institutions around the world will join in the coming months. The initial plan was to release the news so that the first news reports about the initiative would come out closer to the website's unveiling at 12:01am Wednesday EDT or 12:01pm HKT. But the story leaked early and the San Francisco Chronicle reported it on Monday without any comment from the participants who had all agreed not to talk until the official launch. Since then, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, WSJ China Blog, the AP, AFP and others have reported the story with remarks from some of the participants. We can expect more coverage in the next 24 hours. A few people have called me asking "does this thing have any teeth" or "is this thing more than just a figleaf for companies to get congress off their backs?" Organizations like Human Rights Watch, Human Rights in China, Human Rights First, and the Committee to Protect Journalists would not be putting their reputations behind this thing if they didn't think it was meaningful. Earlier this week a few of us from Ohio Power Tool went to the STAFDA ( Specialty Tools & Fasteners Distributors Association) trade show in Denver, CO. We had a chance to talk with the guys from Ridgid Tool and get some video of the new Ridgid Seesnake Micro Explorer. It would be nice if they would actually ship these and then we could all get a first hand look at it but in the mean time hopefully this video will give you a little better idea of how the menus work and some of the new features.
We are accepting pre-orders for the Micro Explorers 30036 at Ohio Power Tool. I am confident these are going to be in any day now. Apparently there were some software errors that caused the most recent delay but the word on the street is these have been resolved and are shipping shortly.
More videos and info on the STAFDA show will be coming shortly.

Ever wonder why you don't see Asians and Hispanics jumping over Lebron James for a dunk? Genes maybe....you decide. In the mean time see who makes up the world of sports.

Milwaukee takes great pride in the fact that they invented the
Sawzall recip saw almost 60 years ago. They really don’t like it when anyone else makes a competitive saw so naturally they are constantly updating and coming out with different versions to be more powerful, durable, lighter, cheaper, faster or some combination thereof. The two new models are both 12 amp models where the 6509-31 has a ¾” stroke and 6519-31 has the 1-1/8” stroke. These should replace the current 6509-22 11 amp models and be similar in price, maybe $120-130 range. The new saws feature a gear protecting clutch to extend the life of saw, counter weight to decrease vibration and claims a 2x faster cut time (not sure what that is comparing). We haven’t gotten an exact date on the release but it should be soon. It will be interesting to see how these perform vs the larger Sawzalls. More info and pricing will be available soon, in the mean time checkout all the
Milwaukee Tools on Ohio Power Tool. Full Milwaukee press Release below.

After a 2 day adventure to Bosch Tools North American home office in Mount Prospect, Il it is hard not to still be excited about all the cool new stuff coming. So many new products to such a wide range of fields from woodworking to concrete to metal working to cordless and so on. Maybe they put something in the water but it was very impressive to see so much innovation from just 1 year ago. We will work hard to get several posts up over the next few weeks, in the mean time we will do our best to focus on thing at a time.
Starting at the top, the Crown Jewel of the event would have to be the new Axial-Glide 12” Miter Saw GCM12SD. Available shortly at Ohio Power Tool with a current target price of $699; although no official dates on when these will hit the shelves... we are hoping soon! Of course the new Bosch GCM12SD will share/improve upon some of the great features on the current Bosch 12” Miter 5312 ($590, Ohio Power Tool) including upfront controls and built-in material support extensions.

As you can see in the pictures (more in this 32 Pic Album) the slide arm is the biggest innovation here but if you look close it is actually 2 arms working together, one on X and other on the Y axis. This mechanism is an extremely sturdy feat of engineering, and my last reservations were cleared away when the Bosch product manager started swinging a 2x4” at it like Mark McGwire in ‘98. The bearings are also sealed so no matter how much saw dust or debris gets on the arm, the travel will not become jerky unlike other slide saws where the rails are exposed.

Another great benefit an event like this offers is to have all the competitors’ latest & greatest models in one place to inspect and test alongside the Bosch. It takes great confidence in your products to set up a demo like that and while there were no price tags on the units it was pretty obvious the Bosch offered a clear advantage over the competition in terms of depth of work area used. For more details on the new Axial-Glide Miter Saw GCM12SD read the full Bosch Press Release below.
