Remember that wacky zoom lens attachment for Nintendo's DSi that was launched back in January? Amazingly, the product design team convinced everyone else in the company to move ahead with plans for production, and now it's making its way out to cold, steel shelves. $24.99 buys you a hard shell case for your handheld along with a detachable optical zoom lens, which supposedly gets your sensor eight times closer to a given subject than Nintendo ever intended. These days, when people aren't talking about the Apple Tablet, they're talking about how Apple's next target is the Big Three gaming companies. The iPhone will topple them! iPhone is a revolutionary gaming device! Well, certainly a little optimism is warranted; the iPhone has inarguably changed the landscape of mobile phones, personal media players, and to a lesser extent personal computers. Why shouldn't Apple extend its holy sovereignty to gaming? It already has, in fact. But Apple has come kicking and screaming the whole way. The iPhone, you understand, was not meant to be a gaming device, and in Cupertino, Apple's intentions are paramount. Apple could never accidentally create a platform for gaming; if it wasn't meant for gaming (or enterprise, or medical use, or reading e-books, etc.) from the beginning, Apple doesn't want it happening at all. Because if Apple didn't intend it, it's outside of the bounds they set into the platform (regardless of how well it works, much like tethering) — it breaks the mold and, ironically, that's the last thing Apple wants. And there are plenty other reasons not to expect Apple to jump into the gaming arena any time soon.

In a new study conducted by Scott Owens out of the University of Mississippi, the Wii Fit was loaned to eight families and the usage and fitness impact was tracked over time -- three months before they got the Wii, and three months after. The verdict? "No significant changes" in family fitness from the Wii. Interestingly, over the period of three months the daily Wii Fit usage declined a staggering 82 percent, from 22 minutes a day for the first half of the time all the way down to an average of four minutes a day for the last six weeks. The biggest winners here were the children, who did display some "significant" increases in the specific area of aerobic fitness, but we get the feeling that with a bit more stick-to-itiveness the whole family might've been able to raise its game here.
