It sure
took awhile, but Panasonic now has controlling interest of Japan's beleaguered Sanyo Corporation. After shareholders approved the deal last year, the partnership became mired in anti-trust concerns across the globe. That was then -- today the company founded by Konosuke Matsushita is the proud owner of 50.19% of Sanyo for the
bargain price of ¥404 billion ($4.6 billion). That gives Panny access to Sanyo's battery (some of which was sold off to appease regulators) and solar technology as well as its unsurpassed ability for making
dull and matronly consumer electronics. Everybody wins!

In a new study conducted by Scott Owens out of the University of Mississippi, the
Wii Fit was loaned to eight families and the usage and
fitness impact was tracked over time -- three months before they got the Wii, and three months after. The verdict? "No significant changes" in family fitness from the Wii. Interestingly, over the period of three months the daily Wii Fit usage declined a staggering 82 percent, from 22 minutes a day for the first half of the time all the way down to an average of four minutes a day for the last six weeks. The biggest winners here were the children, who did display some "significant" increases in the specific area of aerobic fitness, but we get the feeling that with a bit more stick-to-itiveness the whole family might've been able to raise its game here. Or maybe Nintendo could invest in making some more motion-controlled games that don't become repetitive and shallow after two playthroughs.
Wii Fit found to have 'little effect' on family fitness level, boredom seems to be the main culprit originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 17 Dec 2009 02:11:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

DVI,
HDMI and
DisplayPort may be enjoying the spoils right now, but the
world's most popular port may just give 'em a run for their collective dollars by the end of next year.
DisplayLink, which enables monitors to receive signals via USB instead of through one of the more conventional cables, has been mildly successful with USB 2.0 at the helm, but a whole new world is about to open up with the introduction of
USB 3.0. As you've no doubt
seen by now, the third iteration offers up over ten times the bandwidth of v2.0, which would obviously allow for great resolution support when channeling video. In reality, USB 3.0 is the first USB protocol that could support a legitimate high-def video stream, and it's expected that a prototype device will be shown at CES next month transmitting content at up to 4.8 gigabits per second. In theory, at least, USB 3.0-enabled DisplayLink would allow vast 30-inch panels to be connected to netbooks via USB without having to rely on a sub-native resolution, but then again, said netbooks will probably need a GPU with a bit more oomph than the current Ion can provide. Not like that'll be
an issue for long,
though.

The verdict is in: Windows 7 is Microsoft's best operating system ever. It's stocked with genuinely handy interface upgrades (hello, Aero Snap), long-overdue networking improvements (we love you, homegroups), touchscreen support (long live tablet PCs), and the best Windows Media Center experience yet (ClearQAM support at last).

Don't expect to ride it on solid ground -- much less water -- but what you see above is indeed a hoverboard that floats. Using electromagnets embedded in the podium and a laser system to measure its position, artist Nils Guadagnin has managed to keep a familiar-looking pink plank aloft, a full five years and five months before the real deal supposedly sees common use. Give the man a
pair of kicks, a
car and a
flux capacitor, and he'll be all set. Video after the break.
