"Bailout" was looked up so often at Merriam-Webster's online dictionary site that the publisher named it the 2008 Word of the Year. Defined as "a rescue from financial distress," "bailout" prompted hundreds of thousands of online lookups within just a few weeks. John Morse, Merriam-Webster's president and publisher, told the Associated Press that those who looked it up also seemed to want to know whether it had negative nuances or suggested irresponsibility or blame.Interested in learning ...

As one of the last two Vista holdouts on
HP's online laptop store (the other being HDX16), we were wondering what was going on with the Pavilion
dv3. Well, it's still not stateside, but Germany and the UK can apparently pick up the
Windows 7-equipped touchscreen dv3-2200 now for £799.99 / €899 (somewhere between $1,305 and $1,350, respectively, in comparable US currency), with difference of pricing based on the separate listings. Additionally, we spotted the 11.6-inch
dm1-1000 -- which was also
leaked alongside the dv3 -- with a 1.2GHz Celeron processor and that hot new OS from Redmond. We're sure it'll come to the US eventually, but for now we're just gonna have to wait ever, ever so patiently.
[Thanks, Adam and everyone]

Nobody is safe in the House of Murdoch, especially on the Internet side of the house. Yesterday, News Corp's online games business,
IGN Entertainment, announced layoffs to its staff. Cuts were pretty even across all parts of the company, and we've been able to learn that about 65 people in total lost their jobs, or roughly 20 percent of staff. Joystiq was the first to get a hold of the
layoff memo from president Roy Bahat, who wrote:

Stealth Israeli startup
UnitedParents is stepping closer to the bright lights today by announcing a
$900K seed round, and the beta availability of its online child safety product, aimed at alerting parents whenever their children become involved in a potentially dangerous relationship with online predators and / or cyber-bullying. UnitedParents' consumer product is a downloadable piece of software (Windows only for now) that monitors children's online activity. The product will initially latch onto the more popular Instant Messaging apps such as those by ICQ, AIM, MSN, and Yahoo, but will expand to include online chat modules such as that of Facebook's. Further down the road, the product will also monitor email and public chat rooms.

Pulling back from the verge of a bottomless pit of vaporware despair comes the
Squeezebox Touch, the latest in Logitech's line of connected music players that had originally been slated to launch way back in December of last year. The device is the spiritual successor to the Squeezebox 3, eschewing the older model's VFD display for a 4.3-inch color touchscreen LCD and adding in support for SD cards and USB mass storage devices directly from the unit itself. At $299, it's not the kind of knee-jerk purchase you can make without thinking twice -- but compared to
Sonos, it's still the value brand. Anyone else see the potential for a
Chumby app on this thing?
[Thanks, remd]
