We knew good and well Microsoft was gearing up to drop a pre-beta release of Windows 7 in developers' laps at its Professional Developers Conference, but now we're being treated to a host of details from Redmond itself. For starters, it's showing off (for the first time, mind you) its new Web applications for Office. As you'd expect, said apps are "lightweight versions of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote that are used from within standard web browsers." According to Ray Ozzie, chief software architect at Microsoft, it's aiming to bring "the best of the web to Windows, and the best of Windows to the web." 'Course, we're also told about improved navigation, a new taskbar (preview shown), support for multi-touch gestures, Device Stage and enhanced AV integration -- all things that have our interest decidedly piqued. Hit the read link for the full spill direct from the horse's mouth.

Checking out the 2010 IBS

After 10 hours of trucking around the 2010 International Builders' Show at the Convention Center in Las Vegas, I finally have a chance to put my feet up and comment on some of the cooler products and innovations I saw on day #1. Whirlpool's MicroEtch refrigerator shelves warranted a snapshot from the iPhone and a TwitPic. Not exactly bells and whistles, but anyone who has suffered a spill in the fridge can appreciate a simple containment system worked into each shelf. Owens ...

Animal welfare groups are suing BP for burning endangered sea turtles and are asking a US court to stop the oil giant's 'controlled burns' on the Gulf of Mexico spill. The lawsuit filed on Wednesday says BP is violating the Endangered Species Act and other laws with their "controlled burns" in the Gulf of Mexico.

Digg: Can BP's Image Survive the Spill?

Posted by on under billi, bp, spill, company worth |

The company, worth around $350 billion, can survive a hefty financial hit. However, the damage to BP's image is far more costly — and will take much longer to fix. A lot of the blame, say public-relations experts, falls on BP's own executives.

NASA Creates First Global Forest Map Using Lasers

MikeCapone writes "Scientists, using three NASA satellites, have created a first-of-its-kind map that details the height of the world's forests. The data was collected from NASA's ICESat, Terra and Aqua satellites. The latter two satellites are responsible for most of NASA's Gulf spill imagery. The data collected will help scientists understand how the world's forests both store and process carbon. While there are many local and regional canopy maps, this is the very first global map using a uniform method for measure."
