For our “The Cure for iPhone Envy” ad campaign we leased the window on the BART exit outside the SF Apple Store. Our contract with BART’s ad agency specified that the ad would go up on Monday morning, the day of the WWDC keynote. However, the ad agency jumped the gun and our ad went up on Friday the weekend before. Shortly after the ad was put up, it was ripped down by a BART employee. A tipster sent me pictures of this happening:

BART’s excuse for ripping down the ad was that it was “too dark” and not letting through enough light into the BART exit. However, we have pictures that show there was plenty of light coming through the ad (the ad is printed on a clear plastic material):

We then submitted the following revised ad with a white background. A white ad would have let even more light through (notice how bright the bottle is in the original ad above). However, it was rejected for having a solid white background (!).

At the ad agency’s request, we then made the background completely transparent. It’s a lot harder to read text on a transparent background… After complying with all their requests to change the ad, we still haven’t been given a firm date on when the ad will be back up.
Apple is a major BART advertiser (in the past they’ve plastered entire BART stations with iPod ads). Apple’s WWDC conference ends on Friday. It’s pretty obvious what’s going on here… I’m sure our ad will conveniently be back up after WWDC ends.

Street dates are invariably broken somehow, somewhere even when it comes to the
biggest products and companies, and Microsoft is certainly
no exception, with it now able to chalk up at least one sold copy on the Windows 7 charts thanks to an exceptionally eager college bookstore. While it didn't come in an actual retail box, this does indeed appear to be a legitimate education copy of the OS and, according to our tipster, it has been successfully activated. A little earlier than the usual slip-up to be sure, but we have a sneaking suspicion this won't be the last copy that drops before the big October 22nd date. Feel free to let us know in comments if you happen to come across one.

First thing's first: there's no way to verify that the above image is a legitimate HTC doc. The tipster seems reliable, having provided
WMPoweruser with the
HTC Mozart video yesterday, but until we witness Peter Chou holding the damn thing up in front of an audience struggling to get a WiFi signal, we'll remain cautious. Anyhow, what we're looking at above is the claimed first visual of that ephemeral
HD7 from HTC, replete with a dedicated camera button and what looks like a dual LED flash, along with a MicroUSB data/power port and headphone jack at the bottom (identical to the
HD2 and
Desire HD). It's reassuring to see much of the glorious HD2 heritage being carried over into this successor atop HTC's Windows phone line, though if you're not all that keen on jumping on what looks like
yet another superpowered 4.3-inch slate, there's always the rumored
Trophy handset as well.

This morning we had
schematics, by lunchtime the HD7 received its first purported image (visible after the break), and now there's already an even bigger and better picture showing the supposed
HTC Hub-enriched Windows Phone 7 interface (see above). Any bets against the phone actually dropping into our laps by dinner time?
HTCInside.de has garnished its imagery of the phone with a list of specs, headlined by a 4.3-inch WVGA screen, 1GHz Snapdragon SOC (the same
QSD8250 as rumored for the
Mozart), a 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, 720p video recording, and 8GB of built-in storage. No, we're not exactly blown away by this hardware inventory either, but
WMPoweruser has agreed with everything on the list, excepting a MicroSD expansion slot -- its tipster doesn't think there'll be any such expandability.

Okay, we know now that Amazon is on the verge of
releasing an Android-based app store. But last week, before we knew that, we got an interesting tip that such a move was coming soon -- this week, actually. And that tip came with a bonus attached -- the tipster also heard that Amazon was going to be releasing an iPad competitor alongside the store. Now, unlike the app store, we don't have any further information to verify this tablet. But again, this tipster nailed the app store part of this news -- and knew a couple other tidbits that turned out to be true. So it certainly seems possible that they're right again.
