Just as it did
earlier this year, Microsoft has opened the preview program to let the most hardcore of Xbox 360 owners poke around the updated dashboard -- presumably with access to all the
1080p instant-on streaming, Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm add-ons we've been expecting -- ahead of its official release in order to shake out any remaining bugs. While worldwide console owners should scrape together console IDs, make & model of your TV, router and more in hopes of receiving an invite next week, a little more concrete news is in order for the UK, with the console launch of
Sky TV nailed down for October 27. You'll have to wait until then to find out exact pricing and channel line up availability, 'til then it's a matter of finding out who on your friends list is most suited for the inevitable football viewing party.

The eagle-eyed folks of
learnbemobile have come across this stupendous leak of Microsoft's forthcoming
Windows Mobile 7 OS. It would appear that some last minute alterations were taking place under the covers in Barcelona, though apparently no one bothered to check if there were cameras around before lifting said covers. You can see what appears to be some kind of
Xbox Live integration -- which was
heavily rumored already -- taking up a corner of what's presumably a new home screen for the OS. There are also big, finger-loving notice icons for calls, text messages, and email, with sections for Facebook, Pictures and "Me" filling out the rest. We don't have any more info than these few shots, and the aforementioned site just has the images camped out on its Facebook page, but it definitely looks to be the real deal. If this is the new face of Windows Mobile, color us excited for
today's event -- it looks like a radical departure (or at least a crazy skin). You can check out a few more shots in the gallery below.
[Thanks, HJ Willems]

A few days after an untimely leak on Xbox Live, Epic Games has now officially announced Gears of War 3 for next April. Details are scant (though Edge speculates on possible new gameplay features), but it will contain 4-player co-op and be an Xbox 360 exclusive. A trailer was released for the game, and designer Cliff Bleszinski had this to say:
"When we released Gears of War more than three years ago, we set out to tell the world an unforgettable story of bravery and sacrifice in the face of insurmountable odds, and a year from now, players will get the chance to experience the final chapter in the story of Marcus Fenix and his companions in Delta Squad. This is definitely the biggest and most dramatic chapter yet in the Gears of War saga, and we can't wait to deliver it."

| It's Saturday night. My wife and I just get back from a rehearsal dinner for a friend's wedding and I'm still a bit restless. So, having just beaten Red Dead Revolver, I figured I'd give the multiplayer a spin. Now, I'm still fairly new to the XBox and up until this point, my sole online gaming experience is pretty much limited to a few games on Steam and Ultima Online back in the day or meeting up specifically with friends and people I know over Live. I play a hell of a lot of TF2 and, for the most part, people are pretty decent. So imagine my shock and surprise when it takes approximately two minutes before I'm called a "nigger fag" by some squeaky-voiced 13 year old who proceeds to berate my supposed lifestyle choices and imagined skin color. The kid actually started repeated "oogie boogie!" at me. Up until this point, I wasn't using the headphones and this was all coming unsolicited through my television speakers. So of course I reached for my headset and asked what the kid's problem was. And to my amazement, people started defending the kid and repeating his accusations of "nigger fag"dom. So that was infuriating and awful. But when it got downright depressing was when another kid joined who sounded like he was probably black. Once the kid spoke, everyone forgot about me and started spewing the most hateful, awful, racist shit I've ever heard in my entire life. I couldn't believe it. I heard the black kid telling someone what they were saying and the kid's dad hops on and starts playing and, to a degree, trying to verbally fight back against these horrible racist hillbillies. They jump on him even worse. Telling him to go back to Africa, that they should find him and hang him from a tree. Is this what online gaming on an XBox is? Why and how does anyone put up with this? It's enough to make me go back to my PC games and never look back. submitted by johnhutch to gaming [link] [247 comments] |
