E Ink's AM300 developer's kit (made with the help of Epson) certainly seemed impressive enough when it was first announced, but there's nothing quite like a video to bring our newspapers of the future to life, and one courtesy of E Ink itself has now thankfully turned up on YouTube. While the display's 16 levels of gray and pen-based input capabilities aren't entirely unique to E Ink, its ability to display speedy animation does seem to be a step above most other similar displays and, naturally, it's being touted as ideal for advertisements. Head on past the break to check it out for yourself.

Boing Boing: The BJD scene (not what you think)

Elfdoll is a South Korean firm that sells resin-based ball-jointed dolls (BJD) with hyperreal features. THese "blank" dolls are popular among collectors who mod them in fantastic ways with hair, outfits, and swapped body parts. Elfdoll recently opened a showroom in Los Angeles that has become a hub of BJD hackers in Southern California. The Los Angeles Weekly's Liz Ohanesian explores the BJD scene through some incredibly strange photos. From the LA Weekly (photos by Jackie Canchola): â??We think that we are not a doll company, we are artists,â?? says Elfdoll Foreign Trade Manager Yeounjoo Lim, best known to her customers and friends as Ms. Cholong... Ms. Cholongâ??s job is part curator, part community organizer and part salesperson, bringing together BJD enthusiasts for events where purchasing the handmade objects is only part of the fun. At the showroomâ??s October 25 party, hobbyists arrived with arms filled with pieces from their own collections reconfigured to fit Halloween images of comic book heroes, steampunks, fairies, Japanese-styled Lolitas and goth boys in drag... â??Other companies, when they market the dolls, they actually create characters for them,â?? says Chris Holz of Melbourne, Australia, a collector who happened to arrive in Los Angeles just in time for this event. â??The Elfdolls donâ??t have a background. Theyâ??ve got a name, but thatâ??s tantamount to just identifying the doll. When people buy them, itâ??s whatever they want.â?? Elfdoll: Don't Call It A Toy Company...

iPhone SDK

Great news is here - iMatrix is ported into SDK version beta 3!!!

New iMatrix will be a little bit different from current toolchain based version because SDK has different set of frameworks and classes.

Simulator based application cannot handle camera attached to my Mac Mini, but it does all the rest quite well and, that is very important, according to stricts rules Apple set. No more private frameworks, no more Address book hacks; just clean and legal stuff! Next days I will publish photos of new iMatrix application... return here frequently please.

There are sad news as well. It looks like import/export of notes and Safari's bookmarks should come out... The same with Calendar...
BUT you will be surprized as well! Will say just this: iTunes, YouTube and Google Maps!

Now the story :) At first, I had to purchase new Mac Mini because OS X Leopard is vital for SDK. After some time and with the help of my collegues, I found what I looked for! After updating the system and installing SDK/Xcode I became "happy" owner of development environment for creating cool and amazing native iPhone applications! Well... then I had several weeks of hard coding and getting familiar with Xcode... It is in past now! After all, I can say that Apple did realy cool product. It is not ready and quite fresh but it works and has HUGE potential. I personally will use it for sure.

(To be continued)

iPhone and Movies Mashup

Mashup Camp winner helps you make wise movie rental decisions

Never rent a bad movie again. I created iMoveMash.com after renting one bad movie too many at the local supermarket's DVD rental kiosk. The free-wifi sign near that kiosk and my long time interest in mobile applications sparked an idea to help movie lovers make better rental decisions.

The resulting mobile web application integrates 7 data sources, including DVDPlay's kiosk content, Blockbuster's latest movies, IMDB movie ratings, Kids-In-Mind movie ratings, YouTube, Yahoo Movies, and Google Maps.

iMovieMash lists the kiosk's or Blockbuster's new movies in descending IMDB movie rating order (best movie first). Each movie I list is also a link to Yahoo Movies and search results from YouTube's API. The YouTube search query is biased in a way that is likely to return trailers or videos related to the movie itself. When clicked, the YouTube results launch the native YouTube application in the iPhone or iTouch.

iMovieMash took 2nd place at Mashup Camp 6, where I demo-ed the application dozens of times in 5 minute "speed geeking" sessions. That was a good bit of fun, and re-enforced the concept that successful products have a simple message, solve a real problem, and look good.

The application was developed with Perl for the backend and the IUI iPhone framework for the front end. It looks best on the iPhone or iTouch, but runs fine on a Blackberry or any web browser. Just goto http://imoviemash.com.
