Nokia's
no stranger to the
patent application process here in the United States, and while we've certainly seen some
strange ones emanating from its R&D labs, this one looks like something that should be implemented on the double. Explained as a "user interface for controlling an electronic device," the multitouch solution would essentially allow you to pinch, zoom and rotate objects as usual, but it would also employ an array of pressure sensors in order to give your motions a sense of severity. If executed properly, one could theoretically envision the use of a strong push to simulate a double tap (for example), or as a means to activate a secondary function that generally requires another button press or the use of a 'Function' key. Hit the read link for all the mumbo jumbo, but be sure to keep your expectations within check. Or not.

Remember that
wacky zoom lens attachment for Nintendo's
DSi that was launched back in January? Amazingly, the product design team convinced everyone else in the company to move ahead with plans for production, and now it's making its way out to cold, steel shelves. $24.99 buys you a hard shell case for your handheld along with a detachable optical zoom lens, which supposedly gets your sensor eight times closer to a given subject than Nintendo ever intended. You'll also be mocked eternally if you're ever caught using this in public, but hey, maybe you're thick-skinned.

As we
noted earlier, Google announced an update today to its Android OS for Nexus One phones that would enable the pinch-to-zoom multi-touch feature for the first time in a few Google apps: Maps, Gallery, and the Web Browser. We've just received the update, which is technically firmware 2.1-update1, and have taken a video of the new functionality in action. While some third-party apps have taken advantage of mutli-touch for some time on Android, Google has resisted the feature for its own apps — likely due to an agreement with Apple. But now,
all bets appear to be off.

Motorola has just announced its eighth
Android phone at MWC, dubbed the Cliq XT or Quench outside the US (and previously known as the
Zeppelin). Highlights include a 3.1-inch touchscreen with a mysterious "high-resolution" (last time we
heard, it was 480 x 320), "pinch and zoom" touch capabilities, 5 megapixel camera (with autofocus and LED flash), a navigation touchpad and a dual-mic noise cancellation system. The rest of the features are pretty bog-standard: stereo Bluetooth, AGPS, FM radio,
Motoblur and Adobe Flash Lite. Unlike the
Cliq there's no physical keyboard here, but if that's how you roll then look out for T-Mobile USA's launch and pricing for this phone next month. The rest of us shall quench our thirst with
something else for the time being.

The iPad should technically be
perfect for comics. The large screen, the swipe gestures and the pinch-to-zoom all make digital comics
that much better than it has before. But no one comic reader has gotten it completely right.
